Question :

Using only a 5-gallon bucket and a 3-gallon bucket, put exactly four gallons of water in the 5-gallon bucket. (Assume you have an infinite supply of water. No measurement markings on the buckets.)

My Solution :

  1. Lets fill up the 3 Lt. bucket first and pour it in the 5  Lt. bucket.
  2. Again fill up the 3 Lt. bucket and pour it in the 5 Lt. bucket till its full. Now the 3 Lt. bucket has 1 Lt. of water.
  3. Now pour out all the water from 5 Lt. and add the 1 Lt. from the 3 Lt. bucket into the 5 Lt. bucket.
  4. Now again fill the 3 Lt. bucket fully and pour it into the 5 Lt. bucket.
  5. Hey we got 4 Lt. in the 5 Lt. bucket……. 😉

    Follow these simple steps:

    1. Fill 5g bucket fully
    2. Transfer from 5g to 3g, without overpouring, which makes 2g in 5g bucket & 3g in 3g bucket
    3. Pour out 3g bucket, making it empty. Remember that water is abundant & so we can waste a few gallons
    4. Transfer the remaining 2g from 5g bucket to empty 3g bucket, making 5g bucket empty
    5. Fill the empty 5g gallon fully again.
    6. Fill the 3g bucket from water in 5g bucket. Remember that 3g bucket already has 2g water & hence can take only 1g water from 5g bucket.
    7. We’re DONE! There are 4-gallon water in 5g bucket.
